Leaf days: keep it casual
A leaf day comes when the Moon is in a water constellation: Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces. Gardeners use them for leafy crops and watering. For wine they are middling at best.

How wine tastes on a leaf day
On leaf days wines can feel muted and a little green, with fruit taking a step back. It is fine for everyday drinking, but not the moment to judge a wine or open a showpiece.
What to open
- Everyday, easy-drinking bottles
- Wine for cooking, or a glass with dinner
- Herbal, savory styles that don't lean on fruit
Leaf days in the vineyard
Leaf days are associated with foliage, so growers tend to leave canopy and leaf work to them. The idea comes from biodynamic farming, which links each of the four classical elements to one part of the plant: fire to fruit, air to flower, water to leaf and earth to root.
| Element | Constellations | Day type | For wine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Fruit | Best for wine |
| Air | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | Flower | Good for wine |
| Water | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | Leaf | Not ideal |
| Earth | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Root | Poor for wine |
Because the constellations are different sizes, leaf days don't come in neat blocks. The Moon returns to the same element roughly every nine days. How the calendar is calculated.

Which constellations make a leaf day?
The three water constellations: Cancer, Scorpio (including the stretch of Ophiuchus, as in Maria Thun's calendar) and Pisces.
